A leading professional in the aviation and airline industry, David Pflieger began his career as a pilot in the US Air Force, eventually becoming a B-52 instructor pilot, a C-130 aircraft commander, an aviation attorney, and then a businessman serving as an officer, director, President and CEO of various airlines, including Air Pacific/Fiji Airways, Virgin America, Delta Air Lines, Silver Airways, and Hawaii Island Air. David Pflieger now leads the Anchorage, Alaska-based airline Ravn Air Group as its President and CEO.

With safety as the airline's top priority, Ravn Air Group recently gained Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) approval for its Safety Management System (SMS). The SMS program provides the same protections and standards as SMS programs in place for U.S. airlines much larger than Ravn Air, according to a statement by Dave Pflieger. An SMS program helps to identify and reduce safety issues that might be present within an airline. The system enables the airline staff to identify risks and either eliminate them or reduce such issues to acceptable levels. In the company’s press release about FAA approval of its SMS, Mr. Pflieger noted that the airline’s “safety culture starts with our people,” and “we expect everyone to play an active role in ensuring we operate at the highest level of safety possible.”

Ravn Air Group stands out as the largest regional carrier serving Alaska, with a fleet comprising 77 aircraft operating nearly 3,000 flights per week to over 118 different destinations. Learn more at www.flyravn.com.

David “Dave” Pflieger serves as president and CEO of Alaska-based Ravn Air Group, a leading air transportation and logistics services provider. Outside of his work, David Pflieger supports the Mamanuca Environmental Society (MES) in its efforts to protect the marine and terrestrial environments of Fiji’s Mamanuca Islands. MES activities include the annual Dive Into Earth Week on April 22.

Earth Week raises awareness about the environmental risks and damages associated with littering, engaging the entire Mamanuca area in a collaborative cleanup effort, the largest concerted environmental cleanup in that region. An increasing number of people participate each year, uniting the tourism industry, diving operators, local resorts, village communities, and nongovernmental organizations.

Activities focus largely on public education and cleaning up land and underwater environments. Participants distribute pamphlets on the importance of coral reefs and how to protect them. MES also delivers talks to village communities and children, and employs team leaders to direct underwater cleanups.

Airline executive David “Dave” Pflieger serves as the President and CEO of Ravn Air Group, a transportation and logistics company based in Alaska which is also the State's largest regional carrier.

When David Pflieger, led Air Pacific/Fiji Airways, he also supported nonprofit organizations in Fiji such as the Mamanuca Environment Society (MES). Dedicated to protecting the land and marine resources of the Mamanuca region, MES draws upon partnerships with local communities, government agencies, and international nongovernmental organizations. The nonprofit sponsors projects that range from conserving turtles to teaching children in Fiji about the importance of protecting the environment.

MES engages in education and awareness campaigns designed to discourage children from disposing of their water bottles, plastic wrappers, and other trash in rivers that are eventually carried out to sea and can damage coral reefs. The organization also conducts clean-up campaigns that aim to eliminate trash on the beach. For instance, MES organized a program in the village of Solevu involving nearly 30 children, who picked up rubbish at a local beach.

Moreover, the organization concentrates on removing harmful crown-of-thorns starfish that feed on coral reefs. The explosion of starfish has had a devastating effect on the reefs. To learn more, visit the official MES website at www.mesfiji.org

MES to Launch Turtle Conservation Program in Fiji

10/26/2017

An airline executive, David “Dave” Pflieger has served as the chief executive officer of Silver Airways, Hawaii Island Air, and Air Pacific Limited in Fiji. Supportive of environmental conservation causes, David Pflieger has donated to the Mamanuca Environment Society (MES).

MES is an active environmental organization focused on protecting the marine environment of the Mamanuca Islands in Fiji. The organization runs several programs and is set to launch a new turtle conservation project to protect the islands’ vulnerable turtles.

The Mamanuca Islands are home to several turtle breeding and nesting grounds. Some of the turtles found in the islands include the green turtle, hawksbill turtle, loggerhead turtle, and leatherback turtle. However, the islands’ turtle population has a very low survival rate of 1 in 1,000. Human encroachment and predators such as crabs are part of the reason for this low survival rate.

MES’s turtle conservation project seeks to improve the turtles’ chances of survival by developing community education and awareness initiatives, monitoring the breeding and foraging habits of the animals, and formulating turtle conservation guidelines for the community.
